In June 2008, the Frederick County Board of Supervisors approved, by a 4-3 vote, a rezoning that would allow the limestone mining operation at Middletown to more than triple in size. New quarry pits would destroy core battlefield of the Civil War Battle of Cedar Creek, as well as other natural, cultural and historic resources. SVN is a member of a coalition of groups working to scale back the destructive mining expansion adjacent to the Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park.
